(The Art of Eight Limbs)
Muay Thai is known for its legendary conditioning, superior defensive structure and devastating offense. It’s often called the art of eight limbs—Thai boxers strike with punches, kicks, knees and elbows from right and left. In class, you will learn how to defend against and counter common attacks, how to develop good body mechanics, speed and power, and how to get in great shape while doing something fun. Muay Thai is an excellent way to build endurance, increase mobility and manage stress. And our “go at your own pace” approach allows students of any physical ability, age or fitness level to participate.
What to Expect During Class – MKG Rounds V. Thai Boxing
We have two types of Thai boxing classes at MKG, including Rounds Class and “regular” Muay Thai. In Rounds Class—which is a format unique to the Minnesota Kali Group—you will cycle through sets of elbow, knee and kick drills in rapid succession. Each three-minute round is followed by sprint kicks. The drills are designed to ingrain specific defensive structures and striking combinations. Rounds Class is the most intense workout we offer at MKG.
The Muay Thai class takes a more traditional approach to the art. You will shadow box, kick Thai pads, practice glove drills, and work on specific techniques whether in boxing, kickboxing or clinch. Sparring is always optional and safe. This is a more technical class and its format will vary slightly from week to week.
Our Lineage
Our program is guided by Grandmaster Chai Sirisute, founder of the World Thai Boxing Association. Ajarn Rick Faye has been an instructor in the Thai Boxing Association since the 1980s and we are fortunate enough to host Grandmaster Chai in seminar every April.
